Manolis Zorzos illustrated by Marion Biet Manolis Zorzos was born in Syros. Growing up on an island it was an obvious decision to be a sailor. But not for Manolis, who preferred building ships. He followed his father’s path and eventually he became a sailor – a decision he does not regret. Advertisements
Giorgios Zorzos illustrated by Marion Biet Manolis’ son, Giorgos, spent his childhood playing on his father’s boats on the Aegean Sea. He is building his future, and he carries with him the heritage of the island’s culture.
There is an old saying about women on the sea. The sailors used to think they would bring bad luck if they came with them on the ship. Manolis’ daughter also inherited her fathers’ passion for the sea. She has another explanation to this saying…
Now that he has retired, Manolis uses his spare time to build small replicas of the typical Greek ships he used to work on. To him, it is important to show the future generations that there are other possibilities than plastic or steel boats.
